1 John 5:14
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
I believe it's very important to remember that God doesn't just grant us all our wishes and demands that we ask of Him... He will only provide and give what's necessary or needed to carry out His will in me.
1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
Even though we still stumble at the work of Satan and sin, we have the blessing of repenting and confessing before God and He'll forgive us of our wrongdoings. However, the ultimate Sin of denying God and His existence, mercy, and grace will be the one that will lead to death. It's something that can't be taken lightly, something that even prayer itself won't be enough.
1 John 5:21
Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
Not school. Not my relationship. Not friends. Not family. Not self-gratification. The only one that I will worship and put all my love and heart into is God, who has blessed me everything I have now.

1 John 5:1-12
1 John 5:2
This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
This is such a big part of our relationship with God. We need to love like how our Heavenly Father loves us, with no conditions and always forgiving. We also need to obey and follow Him, as hard as that is. Only through this challenge of becoming imitators of His Son Jesus will God transform us into a new being who is always one step closer to being holy and pure.
1 John 5:4
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
We have that strength, providence, and perseverance to overcome anything of the world that pulls us down and causes us to stumble because God walks with us. I always remind myself of this (and is true): God will never allow anything that you can't overcome for you to tackle. Every challenge and trial has a purpose, even if it is the work of Satan, God will use it for His glory by teaching you how to get over this stumbling block.
The coming of Jesus by water and blood symbolizes Jesus' baptism and the voice coming from heaven and Jesus as the atoning sacrifice on the cross respectively. Both of these along with the Spirit testify that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:11
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
New life through Jesus' resurrection as He overcame the grave that the world into which had forced him.

1 John 4
1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
I have no need to fear as God is on my side and has given me the Holy Spirit to dwell in me. The Spirit will be my counsellor and protector against the things of the world.
1 John 4:7-11
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
God loves us so much that He was willing to send his son into this world as a lowly human being so that he can walk among us and teach us what it means to be under His wing of grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love. Is it possible for us to develop that same sacrificial love for others? Probably... but we need to have that desire to have the same heart as Jesus in order to grow and mature in faith.
1 John 4:13
We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us his Spirit.
There's a reason why the indwelling of the Spirit in us is always repeated throughout the New Testament, let alone this book. We always forget how important and significant it is that a part of God is residing in us.
1 John 4:18-21
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Nothing can stand against because God is always for us. There is nothing to fear because God will do away with things that are corrupt and evil. There is nothing to fear of God Himself because He is good and loving and gracious. The definition of faith is trusting and believing in something that hasn't happened or is something that can't be seen. Like the verse says if we love God, someone who's so great that we will never be able to see Him in this lifetime, then we should be able to love all the people around us as well.
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

1 John 3
The message in this book is so encouraging and continues to constantly remind me of two important things: Jesus and loving others.
1 John 3:1-3
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.
The fact that God has still chosen us to be a part of His kingdom is mindblowing. I'm only a mere human being who often stumbles into sin yet He continues to be gracious and accepting. How great is the love of the Father! Knowing that the gift of the Spirit dwelling in us is hope that I can look forward to as it is a counsellor who guides me and rescues me from the darkness.
1 John 3:5
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
Jesus was a perfect, holy man who did not deserve the punishment that he endured on behalf of humankind. He paid for all sin that was ever to be done from now till Judgement Day. He took on the pain and suffering that no one would be able to endure...but now we are free from the world. We are given new life, new hope, new birth in Christ.
1 John 3:7
Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
There are many things in the world that can cause us to walk off the path of righteousness. Greed, jealousy, gossip, anger... these cause us to stumble. When we look the the Holy Word it keeps us on track. Our minds align with that of Christ so that we can be strong against these sinful feelings and remain true in the Lord.
1 John 3:10
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Love one another in speech, deeds, and thoughts. If we all strive to do that in every moment then it will result in us doing what's good in God's eyes.
1 John 3:13
Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.
It's scary to know but it speaks truth. There will be people who will judge, exclude, or persecute you for your faith. We have to stand firm and find God in these times, knowing that He will give us the strength and perseverance to get through those tough times.
1 John 3:16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
Jesus gave up his life for the broken, the wicked, and the needy. If we are to be disciples and imitate him in all aspects then we should try and develop a heart that is also willing to step in for our brothers and sisters. Laying down your life for a stranger may seem to be so hard, but Jesus did it without question. Do we even try and consider? I personally don't and it's my mentality that I really need to change.
1 John 3:21-23
Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
Application: place your trust and confidence in God, knowing that Christ has already freed us from the guilt and shame of sin. Love one another, let it be an overflow from the love the Father has for us.

1 John 2
There are so many encouraging verses in this chapter.
1 John 2:1-3
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
Jesus bridged the gap between God the Father and the broken humanity so that we can still have a relationship with Him. He took upon himself the punishment that should have been ours. If we know Jesus: who he is and his purpose for walking alongside us in human form, than we would have that drive to imitate Jesus in all aspects of life. However, we as humans are still broken so being able to stay on the path and not be led astray by earthly things is difficult.
1 John 2:6
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
We're never going to perfectly be just like Jesus because we are not even near holy at all... but it's the mindset of wanting to be like Jesus, to be pure, clean, and righteous... that is what counts.
1 John 2:12
I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
"Jesus, all for Jesus. All I am and have and ever hope to be". These are lyrics from a worship song that popped up in my head when I read this verse. I am able to desire things and have a mind of my own because of Jesus. I have been forgiven for my sins, and as a symbol of eternal gratitude the things that I'll ever receive should be dedicated to Him... everything for Him.
1 John 2:14
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
When we are able to build our foundation on the Word of Life, then we will not be as easily swayed by Satan's tempting words and thoughts. It will give us the power to overcome anything.
1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Why crave for things that are not everlasting? Money, career, materials don't go with us to heaven. There's something even greater and better that we do not see now but will satisfy all of us to the core... and that is the love of God and being with Him in a place where sadness and suffering will be no more. Satan will not have control over us anymore and there will be no sin. A world like that sounds amazing, I can't even imagine how a utopian world can be like.
1 John 2:20
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
God has chosen us to be adopted into His family. His anointing, protection, and providence is for us to use for His glory. A relationship with the Father grants us access to the truth of His saving grace for us despite our wretchedness and brokenness that was caused by our first father.
1 John 2:24
See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
Find our roots in Christ. He is the one that will help us grow a faith as small as a mustard seed to one that can move mountains. We need to remain in Jesus and allow him to take the steering wheel in the journey called life.

1 John 1
In verse 1 we can deduce that Jesus is the Word of Life manifested into human form.
1 John 1:6-7
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
When we call ourselves disciples, we have to live out the teachings of Christ. If we don't, then we become liars and hypocrites since we don't do what we preach. The road is not easy but knowing that and continuing to push on towards a God-glorifying life then Jesus will help us and will purge the darkness out of us bit by bit.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
I kneel down at the foot of the cross and look to my Father, who I know that because of His unconditional love and Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, I am forgiven and will continue to be blessed so that I can serve and be an example of what a Christ follower should be.
Application: Knowing that you are a disciple, is your life showing that?

John 21
Jesus always guides us to the right bath that reaps promises and blessings, even now when we're not actually in his presence. The Holy Spirit that is later given to us and Jesus together is dwelling among us as a faithful counsellor. Jesus provides.
If we love Jesus, as Jesus asked Peter, we are called to "feed his lambs" and "take care of his sheep"
In verse 18, Jesus foreshadows Peter's God-glorifying death through a future crucifixion: stretching out his hands on the cross and being dressed and led against his will.

John 20
Jesus conquered the grave, overcome the sin that was held to him, and now sits at the righthand throne of God. He purchased us with his blood so that we are now free from the chains of sin.
John 20:29
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
This verse reminds me of what my faith really is like. Although I haven't seen Jesus in person, I know that he is the son of God who came down to earth to teach and be the tribute for the wretchedness of mankind. My wrongdoings that I did, do, and will do have all been forgiven already, by the grace of God with Jesus as the intercessor. Faith is believing in something that is not tangible... and for Jesus it is so worth it, even with any kind of judgement and persecution.
John 20:31
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
I am alive because of Jesus. I love Jesus.

John 19
Readying about the story of how Jesus was obedient to death on a cross according to his Father's will for me will be something that I can never fully grasp. On that cross my sins were taken and now I'm ransomed by Christ. Jesus knew this pain and suffering was coming to him yet he had no complaints. When I look back on my own walk, I complain about something so trivial such as a lack of sleep or ice-cream cravings... all these things that can't even come near to the debt that Jesus cleared with his actions.
I believe that if I can personally understand the Gospel deep down in my heart, then all my words, deeds, and thoughts will begin to align with a lifestyle just like Jesus. Here at the retreat the speaker shed life on dichotomies that we make that shouldn't exist... public vs. private spiritaul life, individual vs. corporate/community spiritual life, and physical vs. spiritual wellbeing. If i can stop compartmentalizing these aspects of life then I will be able to reflect the Gospel and live out a life of a disciple much better.

John 18:12-40
In this passage, Peter denied Jesus 3 times when we was asked whether or not he was his disciple. Our actions and thoughts easily reflect whether or not we are truly his disciple... it's one of those things where you can't be in a state of in-between. You are a disciple of Jesus if you can practice his teachings each day and follow his example. I'm definitely not the best disciple, for me I'm so easily swayed by the sinful thoughts of Satan but I do try to renew myself with the Word in order to put me back on track. I do not want to be like Peter... I want to have a lifestyle that exemplifies the Lord so that when I say that "I am a disciple of Jesus" then people will see something different, yet good.
John 18:36
Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
We cast our eyes to heaven, a part of the kingdom of God is where we will reside for eternity. The kingdom of God is also on Earth, built by followers and believers. We need to be bold, stand firm in our faith, and defend when our faith is challenged. Advancing the kingdom here is part of our calling as a disciple of Jesus and child of God.
Application: Remember that your lifestyle, actions, and thoughts are a testament to you being a disciple of Jesus.
