The thoughts for me: no matter how tough a situation is or whether it be one that goes against what you believe and stand for as Christian, don't be afraid to shine your light because God will be there to hold you up in those tough situations. God is the only one who deserves all the worship, not any other idol that may be taking hold of your life, whether it be school, social activities, money, or a job.

Daniel 3
In this chapter, the King sets up a golden statue and enforces a decree that people who do not worship the golden statue shall be cast into a fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego continue to worship the Living God and they do not fall to the worship of the King's idol gods. The King throws them into a fiery furnace but God sends an angel to protect them from the fire.

He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
God is the wisest and most intelligent. He is the one who gives us the wisdom and knowledge that we need to get through life.

I thank and praise you, O God of my fathers: You have given wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.
When we ask humbly for wisdom and knowledge from God, He will bless us with that. Like Daniel and his brothers who prayed for wisdom to interpret the king's dream. God blessed them that wisdom because they loved God and were obedient in the Lord's ways. If we also are able to at least strive for a God-glorifying life, then God Himself will bless us with gifts of wisdom and knowledge for our challenges in the world.

Daniel 1
I watched the movie called "The Book of Daniel" and I thought it was such a great visual representation of what the book is about. I never read Daniel from front to back but after watching I was motivated to do so.
The first thing that stood out to me about the book is that it's written like a story. It attracts me as a reader to read the text and as a disciple I strive to see what God is trying to tell me through the story of Daniel.
The choice food given to the servants from the king's table must have tasted delicious and seemed like a privilege. However, Daniel chose to only eat what his people would eat and declined the choice food. From this, the thought that entered my mind was that sometimes things that may seem expensive or rich may not always be the best out there. It's very easy to follow society and become a consumer for the trendiest things on the market. However, one needs to avoid this temptation and become good stewards of their money. This can also be learned in terms of temptation in general. We get tempted by worldly and sinful things because it seems good, but really isn't. We need to look through biblical lenses in order to really know what's really good in God's eyes and be able to say no to the things that really aren't.

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
Sometimes you have to put yourself out there and stand up for what you believe in. It may be against social norm.
When you are faithful and are following God, He will provide and bless you in the good times and will be there for you in the bad times. He will help you through any circumstance.

Philippians 4
Philippians 4:3-9
Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow, help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Paul's exhortation to the Philippians is just as applicable to me. As a follower of Christ I should be helping others in their work for the advance of the Gospel. I should value my relationships and to treat them like how Jesus would: gentle, understanding, helpful. I should be thankful for everything that happens, no matter how good or bad it seems because there is always a reason for it happening. I should only be thinking about things that will not make me stumble into sin because I am striving to be more like Christ.
All of this matters even more since I started attending a new school. In the midst of developing friendships with people in my program, I hope to be a light and that God will touch their hearts if they haven't been touched yet.
Philippians 4:11
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
This is hard, but when you look in retrospect and see how God has taught you in your moments- especially in the bad times- you realize how amazing God is at helping you become a better and stronger person.
Philippians 4:13
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
Yes I can. God provides, it's a trait that is very evident in all aspects of your life. Energy to study. Money to buy. Friends to socialize with. A church community for support. These are all blessings from our God.

Philippians 3:12-21
Philippians 3:13-16
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things: And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
We have been freed from our past self, our past mistakes, our past lifestyle so that we can put on our forgiven self, our new mission in becoming worthy disciples and children of God, and a new lifestyle that glorifies our Heavenly Father. Jesus has already made us ready so that we can continue his work here. We can all be thankful and do everything in the spirit of joy because we know that God will take us to heaven when our time comes... and it'll be free of sin, evil, disappointment, and suffering. I can't even imagine what that is like.
However, this type of thinking really does require maturity, as Paul states in this passage. It's not suppose to be an easy task to complete. It's something that we have to continue pressing towards, despite all the obstacles and hurdles that may come in our way. There may be times when we get lost and blinded by the earthly temptations of the world, but God will pull us out of that hallucination and clear our minds from all the wrong things. We just need to continue living up to what Jesus has given us as a gift: a life that has been cleansed and forgiven so that we are adopted into God's family.
Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
It'll be a glorious day when Jesus takes my body and gives it new life in heaven.

Philippians 3:1-11
Why would we have confidence in the flesh? It means that we believe that we can do anything, even save ourselves by all the good works we do. However that's not the case at all. Works will not get us anywhere. Only through faith in Christ.
Philippians 3:7-10
But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ- the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
Knowing Jesus and accepting him as my Saviour has changed my lifestyle completely. I see friends who don't know of God's love and I can see myself doing what they're doing if God hadn't found me. My beliefs are now rooted in something so good and so great, and it will take me on an exciting, but righteous ride of life. Things of the world don't seem as important to me now then continuing to grow as a child of God and disciple of Christ.

Philippians 2
Philippians 2:1-6
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.
Right from the start is a lesson we should never forget.
Jesus obeyed His Father and endured the wrath that should have been for us on the cross. He humbled himself to our likeness so that we can experience what true, sacrificial love is. He did it so that we can be adopted into His family with our faults forgiven beforehand. Indeed all glory to Jesus and may His enduring love for us inspire people to seek Him as their Saviour.
Philippians 2:13-15
for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe
War. Divorce. Theft. Murder. Greed. All these things were manifested from sin. These things are happening in this world we live in right now. How are you making yourself stand out even among the tragedies that are happening around the world? Are you thankful for the things that you have? Do you have a selfless attitude that cares and cries out for the hurting elsewhere? (All questions that I ask myself as well)
The final bit on Timothy and Epaphroditus give us glimpses of a character that lives for Christ. Their joy come from Christ. Timothy is caring, looking out for the interest of others. Epaphroditus did what he could to help Paul continue sharing the Gospel and almost risked his life doing so. Are you able to risk your life for Christ?

Philippians 1
Philippians 1:9-11
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ- to the glory and praise of God.
God manages to put the text that I needed to hear in today's devo. I sinned in terms of lust. I feel dirty and disappointed at myself. I feel like I disappointed my boyfriend and God. I can't shake this feeling off. I look back at what happened and ask myself why I did what I did.
I'm thankful to have a boyfriend who constantly points me back to Christ. Christ has forgiven us from all our sins by going on that cross. All I need to do is repent, see what I did wrong, learn from my mistakes, and let it go. I'm trying to let it go, reminding myself that I'm not perfect and that everyone makes mistakes.
This verse motivates me to spend more quiet time in Scripture because through my ever growing bank of scriptural knowledge, I become more and more aligned to Christ. The temptations and sins that once got me would not be able to get me if I can root myself in what's right and true. Allowing the Spirit to transform and harvest the fruit of righteousness in me is what I need.
Paul is put in chains for proclaiming the Gospel. How far will you go to share the Gospel to those around you haven't heard of the saving love of Jesus?

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
It is a strong proclamation that even I don't think I can say yet. Paul had such great confidence and security in Jesus that living and dying is almost the same: it is for Christ. Being so meek and fragile in the human nature this is something that I try to do, and eventually whether in this lifetime or the next I can proclaim just like Paul.

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel, without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved- and that by God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him
Am I living a life worthy of the Gospel. Sometimes. And that's ok. God knows that we are not perfect and are tempted by things of the world, but God will do what He can to bring us back to him. We need to look only at God and His outstretched arms and run towards that. I need to stand firm in my faith and not be ashamed of what I believe and live for.
The Christian walk was never meant to be easy. It's full of obstacles and challenges that may take you down. The important question is whether you'll get back up and out of the rut.
We bear one another's burdens and suffer together for the sake of Christ.

Genesis 50
Genesis 50:19-20
But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
This is a beautiful testament of Joseph to show how God works in our very own lives today. Things may seem bad and terrible. You may not understand why it's happening and momentarily be bitter towards God for the things that are happening. What we always fail to remember is that God always has the best intentions for us. It may be a stepping stone towards what's to come. It may be a lesson for you to learn. Everything happens for a purpose, and God is good.
A lovely book to read on the beginnings of the work of God and the men who served God wholeheartedly.

Now, I'm not saying that the younger ones should brag about their success over their older siblings and be prideful. I actually took it as an encouragement that no matter how young you are, or how much younger you are compared to others around you, there is still room for much success and achievement. God makes your decisions, your actions, and your happenings into the successes he has prescribed for you.
Don't allow yourself to be underestimated. As cliche as this sounds, unlock your full potential and allow God to orchestrate what happens.
Now, I'm not saying that the younger ones should brag about their success over their older siblings and be prideful. Genesis 46-47
Despite the famine that affected all of Egypt, the Egyptians trusted in Joseph's decisions and requests in order to survive and acquire food. God provided the necessary food. God provides what we need and will not let us waste away because He loves us children. The biggest hill to overcome is trusting that God will not forget or harm us but knowing that things may look bleak but will turn out for the better.
Genesis 41-45
When you trust and do what God desires, He will bless and prosper you like how Joseph turned to God during his suffering in prison and ended up becoming an official in Egypt.
It's never good to stumble into sin, but repentance leads to forgiveness and grace from God. However if you do the opposite and do not see the wrong in your sins, God will give the consequences.
Obeying God will only lead to blessings, happiness, and grace. Like Joseph's brothers they followed the instructions that Joseph gave to them and they were welcomed with kindness and a feast. Not saying that Joseph is equivalent to God but it's a parallel of what our relationship with God should be like.
The journey may be difficult and there may be things that you don't understand or want to do, but God will always make things right for the people who follow and believe in His judgment.

The Lord will bless the ones who follow him and walk down the path of righteousness. No matter what hardships will come, God will be with them and provide for them, protect them. God will help you overcome the temptations around you so that you can be holy and pure. Although we are still weak and sinful humans, what God wants is the desire to be holy. With that your sins will slowly diminish day by day.

In this chapter, Judah made the mistake of sleeping with his daughter-in-law because he assumed that she was a prostitute when he saw her with her face veiled on the road to Timnah where he was going.
Lesson: with your family and friends, never assume because it is risky and can lead to wrong outcomes, always use and believe the facts. It is the same with God. We know for a fact that God is good, loving, righteous, just. If there is anything that happens that seems contrary to what we read and believe, never assume anything and turn to the Word for the facts and truth.

Genesis 37
Here begins the story of Joseph. I know of the general story already and how it has a happy ending, but this first chapter of the story has a good lesson: "think before you speak". Joseph probably shouldn't have boasted and shared the dreams of how he rules over his brothers and parents. It could definitely be taken as Joseph being rude or egotistical. Genesis 36
Interesting fact: hot springs were first discovered by Esau's family.
This chapter may be boring to read all the names and descendants but it shows how God diversified His people and how they were able to live peacefully among themselves to sustain one another. As long as they worshipped God, He provided for them and made nations and kings out of them. Today, instead of making us a king/queen of a nation, He gives us provisions and blessings needed to go through life. Things that we may want or desire could be given as a gift to us, depending on how we will use it.

Genesis 35
God makes up fruitful in different ways. He blesses us with spiritual gifts that can be used in ministry and serving. How are we honouring God with what He has blessed us with?
God mentions to Jacob that He will make nations out of him. I think it's food for thought to think about what would happen if we were in that position. I'm not at the life stage to have children yet, but if so how am I going to bring them up in a way that they honour and love God as well?

Genesis 34
If a loved one of yours or even yoruself has been wronged or hurt, it is likely that you would feel anger and bitterness against the one who did harm and would think about getting revenge. It's portrayed like that in movies and it sometimes happens in reality as well. However, revenge is always fueled by the very emotions that lead us into sin. Revenge is never the way out, rather forgiveness is the key. It's difficult but necessary.
Jesus never thought about getting revenge for what his persecutors did to him, yet he chose to forgive them as a way for them to experience what God's unconditional love can be like. If Jesus could do it for the people who voted and wanted to kill and torture him, then we can definitely do it for those who've hurt us or your loved ones. Things that have been done against us cannot ever compare to what we've done to our Lord.

Genesis 33
This chapter showed the outcome to Jacob's faithfulness in the Lord from the previous chapter. Since Jacob did what God would've wanted him to do (blessing Esau with his possessions that God graciously gave him), Esau was happy to see Jacob despite the gifts and the relationship that was once tainted by jealousy and bitterness was restored to a happy and peaceful one. God makes all things right.

Genesis 32
One of the things that was illustrated in this chapter was a way to handle tough situations... and clearly it is to turn to God for our help and pray. Praying is a form of worship as you are surrendering yourself to God's power, knowing that He is powerful and can do many things. When Jacob heard that Esau was bringing four hundred men along to see him, He was scared and turned to the Lord. God will never forsake us and He will do whatever He needs to bring about the consequences and outcomes that He wants. We just need to believe that He will do what's right, despite what we may think ourselves.
In addition, aligning yourself to God's mindset will help you overcome tough situations as well. Really thinking about what Jesus would do in your shoes will help you make the right decisions in life. Jacob thought that blessing Esau with gifts would show his humility and love towards his brother. Jesus would have probably done something along the same lines.

Genesis 30
Not everything has to be a competition. Sometimes compromises bring out the best outcome. Leah and Rachel didn't have to compete. It led to bitter feelings and jealousy, sins of the world that wrecks our relationship with God. Jacob and Laban didn't have to try and manipulate one another with their flocks if only Laban wasn't so selfish. Jacob uses apparently tricky moves in order to help the deal move more towards his favour. God doesn't bless people who succumb to such actions. Such sin causes havoc in relationships.

Genesis 29
One of the verses that stood out to me really showed how love can make things seem better and easier.

So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her.
Love can really do that. Upon skimming through a commentary on this chapter, they mentioned how our love for another person can be translated to our love for Jesus. If we love Jesus deeply and genuinely, then we can always look forward to spending the rest of our life in heaven and the suffering and endurance that we must go through on earth in this life will pass by fast and be easier to overcome.... what a great parallel to Jacob's example in the Scriptures.
This chapter also shows devotion though. Jacob in total served Laban 14 years before he was able to marry Rachel. This is not likely to happen in today's society but how much are we willing to give up and serve for our loved ones, and most importantly God?Are you devoted enough to always glorify Him and make Him known wherever you go? My devotion needs to continue growing for sure, but God really uses mysterious ways to help me do so. Even giving me time to do my Scripture reading everyday at my workplace is a blessing in disguise.

Genesis 28
When God is good to you and blesses you abundantly, how do you return that love? Back then it was tithing, and in this chapter Jacob offers a tenth of his possessions to the Lord.
Nowadays, tithing can be one component of worship but it's not the only one. It's important not to neglect prayer, devotions, fellowship, and discipleship because all that helps us foster the characteristics of a good Christ follower and child of God.
Upon my own reflection, I think prayer and discipleship and areas that I can improve on. I tend to pray before meals or intentionally with others, but very rarely do I pray and have a conversation with the Lord and me alone. Discipleship is done with the intention of becoming more like Christ by maturing in the knowledge of the Word and also through one's actions in everyday life. I would say that I'm a passive Christian, not really being intentional in my actions so it's something I need to improve upon.

Genesis 27
This chapter illustrates something that should not be done in a family. A family is built upon trust and love. If none of that is present then the family will break and bitterness will be present. Esau and Jacob lie to each other and so the grudge that Esau carries is very real to him. We need to show trust and love to not only our immediate family but also to everyone who's part of God's family as well. This is a mark of Christian that should be visible to everyone.

A simple message from this chapter: live a lifestyle that's glorifying to God. It may not be extravagant or exciting to others but when they experience the kindness and love that they give which stems from God's love for them, it makes it easier for them to see and feel the Lord's presence. It gives them the opportunity to turn and give their lives to the Lord.

Genesis 24
This chapter demonstrates the trust the servant has in the Lord. For the entire duration of his trip to find a wife for Isaac, he continuously relied on the Lord for provision. He trusted that God will make his trip successful for Abraham and that is how it turned out.
There are so many reminders and lessons about trust throughout the Word and it really hits home everytime for me. No matter what challenge or thing these characters are going through, God helps them pull through at the end and He blesses them. Everything they did led to where God wanted them to be. I'm fully at peace now of where I am as well, even after all the waitlist notices for graduate schools several months earlier. God still has a door open for me so I should take advantage and see how He will make the best plan for me.

Genesis 23
This was a chapter where I was a bit stumped as to what the Lord wanted to tell me. This chapter spoke of the death of Sarah and how Abraham wanted to find a burial site for her among the Hittite land. Abraham wa a good man and leader. He was well known by nations and because of his good works they are very generous and kind to him.
This can extend to today. Yes, there are many people out there who are super friendly and caring but are not Christians. There are similar people who are Christians. What matters is that we don't taint this image of being a kind and caring person. Christians ought to be those people but when others see the opposite then they'll it pushes them further away from our faith. We need to have a character like Abraham and be able to reflect these acts and thoughts of love to others always.
Others observe your kind behaviour, they would want to reciprocate in the same way, and this gives an opening for God to work in their hearts.

Genesis 22
An important step in growth is learning from the challenges and obstacles that you face. God uses those times to test your faithfulness and trust in Him. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it can be hard. For Abraham he must've felt despair and sadness hearing that God wanted him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. Abraham is a man of God though, he obeyed with no doubt. He feared God and wanted to listen and do as He says. It may not be sacrificing your own son, but today God may be calling you to do things that seem impossible or crazy. When those times happen to me I find it so hard to listen and follow because it doesn't seem logical or right. However, what gives us the authority to judge and make these decisions for ourselves? We are tainted by sin and God is a pure, loving, and almighty. Whatever He commands will come to a great, good conclusion that we may not understand... and that's ok. The important thing is to trust Him, have faith, and watch to see how God will use you to help others or even yourselves.

Genesis 21
God will never forsake His people. He will protect them and provide, just like how he provided Hagar with the well of water in the desert. This will continue as long as we treasure the Lord in our hearts and follow Him to the best of our abilities.
The long term kindness and friendship between brothers and friends can lead to great things. Working together for the Lord and ensuring that one or the other doesn't stumble will help them grow in the Lord's favour. Just like Abraham and Abimelech, the treaties and oaths that were established in Beersheeba will last. There will be peace between them without grudges or bitterness to one another.

Genesis 20
There are several different concepts of our faith that is illustrated in this passage.
The first is all of us being a part of God's family. God calls us His sons and daughters, and so we would call one another brothers and sisters in Christ. The first account of this title as people being brothers and sisters is found in this chapter when Abraham explains to Abimelech that Sarah, his wife, is still considered his sister too as they are adopted into God's family with God as our Heavenly Father.

Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.
Another concept is of God's justice to those who sin. We have been saved by the power of Christ, and so even when we sin, we can repent and learn from our mistakes and God will not punish us. When we clearly have made an innocent mistake or have done something by accident, we can be assured that God knows and would not pass on the consequences to us. This is illustrated when Abimelech speaks to God in his dream regarding his capture of Sarah, believing she wasn't married at first. God is fair. What a story! I wonder if I'll ever meet an angel.
This chapter really shows how God is mighty and powerful. It shows how he despises and hates the sin that is in the world. He hates how it makes us disgusting and evil-minded. He would do anything to rid the world of this life-sucking evil. He did exactly that for Sodom and Gomorrah.
However, God had faith that His son can change the world... and He was right. We have been atoned by the blood of Christ, such that even when we stumble we won't be struck down but rather given a chance to repent and learn from our mistakes. As quoted from a friend, this is the glorious Gospel of grace. We don't deserve this blessed life but God loves His creation and family so much that He sent His son to die in our place. I'm very thankful to have a God so full of unconditional love.

Genesis 18
One of the verses that really spoke to me was verse 14.

Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son.
Is anything too hard for the Lord? The answer is no. God is almighty and all powerful. Things that may seem impossible is made possible through Him. We always try to contain God within our own understanding, but God is infinte and allknowing, it's impossible for us to contain Him such that we understand Him. Thus, He can do things that we may not be able to do. This is an encouragement knowing that He is truly able.

For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.
This is a great scriptural example that outlines some of the responsibilities that we have as a chosen disciple of the Lord. How are we ensuring that our family and friends are doing things that are good in God's eyes? Or how am I keeping the way of the Lord each day? As always we are encouraged by the fact that God will continue to bless all the days in front of us as long as we look upon Him as sufficient and obey His commands.
The rest of the chapter was very repetitive to read but it does illustrate the fact that our God is a righteous and just God. He will always bless the righteous and punish the wicked. Genesis 17
This is the chapter in which the covenant between Abraham and God is established as circumcision. I remember learning about what a covenant is in my undergraduate religious studies class on the books of Paul. It's a mutual agreement between the two parties where an action must be done to maintain this agreement... something along the lines of that. The bottom line is, a covenant is more than just a verbal promise. It's a commitment. Effort must be put in to maintain this agreement.
Circumcision was the covenant established back then. Even though covenants are not visibly established anymore, we should still maintain a covenant between us and God. God has promised us a spot in His family and has granted us eternal life in heaven. What are we doing to maintain our relationship with God? We don't deserve any of it... but we are called to be His disciples. We're called to spread the Gospel to people. We're called to live out a life of love in the good and bad. This is what we need to do on our end.

Genesis 16
There were such interesting relationships back then, especially with this story between Abram, Sarai, and Hagar... but there's also something to pick up from the Lord from each passage. I believe that in this one God wants us to know that He is always watching over us and hears our prayers and pleads. If we're struggling or suffering He will come save us. He'll never forsake us. God hears us, as that is what the name of Hagar's son Ishmael means. He's always with us. It's an everlasting promise.

Genesis 15
Genesis 15 speaks of Abram presenting animal sacrifices to the Lord as a form of worship. We definitely don't have to worry about that nowadays but something to reflect on is what exactly are you sacrificing as a form of worship to the Lord? Are you trusting the Lord in His way that even though you may not see or understand you continue to worship Him with everything?
For me, I'm sacrificing and letting go of my own dreams and future for the one that God has for me. Whatever the outcome is, I can be assured that it won't be bad, it'll simply be different from what I wanted or expected.

Genesis 14
What a chapter full of tough names to read! I thought that this was a great chapter that demonstrated what we should do to show appreciation, thankfulness, and love for our God for all He has done and given us. It is in this chapter that tithing is first introduced by Abram.
Genesis 14:19-20
and he blessed Abram, saying "Blessed by Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
A lot of people, even I, forget that tithing is a form of worship as well. It shouldn't be hard to do since everything is a gift from God from the start yet we hold onto our wealth and materials too close. We should feel willing to give our money and possessions to the Lord for Him to build His kingdom. I am at fault for neglecting the importance of this act too. A pastor spoke about tithing and one of the things he said that hit home the most for me was this: "how much do we dare keep?" People think that we only need to give 10% of what we own to the Lord when we tithe and they never ask whether we need to give more. How much are we willing to give back to the Lord? That is the question.

Genesis 13
This verse stood out to me in this chapter.
Genesis 13:8
So Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.
This is the behaviour that we should model today. We are a spiritual family with brothers and sisters in Christ. Why quarrel over little things when God has already blessed us with bigger things?
Compromising and bearing one another in love is a trait that we need to have as Christians. There will be disagreements and bitterness between you and others in the future, but what can set us apart as disciples is learning how to forgive and be a light despite these circumstances. Sometimes I make excuses to myself that arguing with my brother is what siblings do, but that is the wrong mentality. We should be caring for our siblings with even greater love because they are the people we walk with and see everyday. That is one of my long term goals that I need to work on... Learning to bear my brother with love, especially since he doesn't have a solid foundation in Christ. I need to be a light for him.

What was encouraging from this chapter is how Abram trusted the Lord in everything. He didn't question Him when He told Abram to take everything and move to where He was told to be. It brings my own trust in God into question. My trust in Him should be just as great as Abram's.
Still currently waitlisted for optometry, I heard that many friends have gotten off the waitlist and accepted into their respective programs. It sucked to know that everyone's dream was coming true except mine. After venting to a best friend about this feeling of disappoint, God spoke through her to remind me that it all works out according to His will and not mine. Clearly my trust and faith in Him is not where it should have been since I was still feeling disappointment. It was a good reminder from this friend I intend to keep my head up high knowing that in September, God will have me wherever He wants me to be.

Genesis 11
This chapter continues to reveal how humankind became so diverse... starting from tribes and communities scattered all over the earth to how different languages were formed when God prevented them from building the Tower of Babel. It's curious to think about what would've happened if mankind was humble and not selfish from the start... if the plan to build the tower never happened, would we all still be speaking the same language? Had we not wanted to be just as high and mighty as God Himself, would there be less conflict and better communication between different groups of people today?

Genesis 10
This chapter was about the clans of Noah and the genealogy. At first I didn't know why it was important to read all those difficult names of sons upon sons upon sons... but after reading up the annotations in my study Bible I realized that it shows how humanity divided into different groups of people... which would lead to the rise of all the different cultures in the world today. The diversity in people stemmed from the spread of Noah's sons to different areas of the world and their sons following suit.

Everything that we ever need is in front of us, all of it a gift from our Lord. The question is whether we are using these gifts and resources appropriately. Are we using it for His glory? Are the things we do edifying?
God gave us the ultimate gift of Jesus. I know that even now as I struggle with doing devos everyday I do not appreciate his sacrifice as how I should be. However I'm thankful that God uses different ways to help me realize my sin and my need for Jesus' saving grace.
In verse 4 it says "that we shall not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it". I was a bit confused at what this verse meant so I searched up the meaning in my study Bible. The verse means that we should not consume/drink blood because through blood is life that God gives us.
Genesis 9:13
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
It's so beautiful to see a rainbow after a summer rain, but it's even more beautiful to know that the rainbow represents how much God loves us. Despite all the wickedness in humanity He chooses to make a lasting promise to not wipe us out... but instead allows us to learn of His goodness and follow Him.

The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
God could've continued with what He was doing and wiped out mankind when we became too evil or wicked. In our society now it probably is just as bad as back then... yet God because of His everlasting love for His creation decides to grant us grace and mercy by blessing us with life. It's life that we often take for granted.
Back then it was physical sacrifices that they were called to do. Today Jesus has taken up that role as the ultimate sacrifice so that our sins today and tomorrow are forgiven. However, personal sacrifices and fasting should still be done as a way to honour God.
Lent is happening right now and I've decided to fast on Instagram as a way to honour my time for more important things and also more time with the Lord. My hope for myself is that it will go beyond Instagram in the future to fasting on bigger things that may be hindering my growth in the Lord.

Genesis 7
Noah follows the Lord's commands, and the Lord is faithful and good to him.
A humble heart that yearns for the Lord like Noah is something that I need to work on. It is a blessing that He continues to lavish so much love and grace upon me when I constantly need Him to pull me out of temptations and distractions of the world and flesh.
May my prayer always be for my heart align with God's, so that I can be a light, a disciple, and a bold woman of God wherever I am.

Genesis 6
The classic story of Noah and the Ark is found in this chapter.
God could've wiped out this earth instantly, even at this moment... but He doesn't because we have been bought with Jesus' blood. Our wrongdoings are forgiven and we are redeemed.

Genesis 5
Lots of numbers and genealogy starting from Adam to Noah. These men lived so long! It's hard to imagine a lifetime that is as long as 962 years. It still can't compare to a eternity with God, living in a place with no evil or hardships that can cause you to fall. An 80 year lifetime feels like a long time... I would trade anything for a 962 year life of goodness and grace with the Lord.

Jealousy leads to anger and bitterness that will easily allow sin to enter and take control of you.
Genesis 4:7
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
The recognition, fame, acknowledgement of your successes and doings are not important... but rather whether what you're doing is morally right and is just in the Lord's eyes. Idolizing earthly things like fame can cause one to stumble and do things that may not be righteous in order to obtain these things that don't last.
Sin may help you accomplish or complete your task, but other than that will bring you no good at all.

Genesis 2
A story of how God creates the world continued...God has now made man and woman, Adam and Eve. It is their responsibility to work together to tend the Garden of Eden without eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
There are so many different occupations and career paths nowadays, and it's very different to know that God's initial "career" for Adam was to simply watch His creation and take care of the beautiful nature around him. I feel that we sometimes forget that since technology and culture has taken over. One of the original responsibilities we had was to sustain the environment... and it sucks that it's only when the damage is observed is when we take action, such as global warming.
Application: everyone has a role as a disciple of Christ, as a member of society, and also a responsibility to care for God's creation as his personal gardeners.

Genesis 1
To read of how God first created this earth that we live in is unimaginable but extraordinary. Our very being was initially made in the likeness of this one, true God. If it was for us being tainted by sin then we would have lived in harmony with God, in paradise. Although it is very unlikely that I'll be able to experience this within my lifetime, I know that when I pass on I'll be able to spend the rest of eternity with the Lord in such a land that is all good, with no evil.

1 John 5:13-21
1 John 5:14
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
I believe it's very important to remember that God doesn't just grant us all our wishes and demands that we ask of Him... He will only provide and give what's necessary or needed to carry out His will in me.
1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
Even though we still stumble at the work of Satan and sin, we have the blessing of repenting and confessing before God and He'll forgive us of our wrongdoings. However, the ultimate Sin of denying God and His existence, mercy, and grace will be the one that will lead to death. It's something that can't be taken lightly, something that even prayer itself won't be enough.

1 John 5:1-12
1 John 5:2
This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
This is such a big part of our relationship with God. We need to love like how our Heavenly Father loves us, with no conditions and always forgiving. We also need to obey and follow Him, as hard as that is. Only through this challenge of becoming imitators of His Son Jesus will God transform us into a new being who is always one step closer to being holy and pure.
1 John 5:4
for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
We have that strength, providence, and perseverance to overcome anything of the world that pulls us down and causes us to stumble because God walks with us. I always remind myself of this (and is true): God will never allow anything that you can't overcome for you to tackle. Every challenge and trial has a purpose, even if it is the work of Satan, God will use it for His glory by teaching you how to get over this stumbling block.
The coming of Jesus by water and blood symbolizes Jesus' baptism and the voice coming from heaven and Jesus as the atoning sacrifice on the cross respectively. Both of these along with the Spirit testify that Jesus is the Son of God.

I have no need to fear as God is on my side and has given me the Holy Spirit to dwell in me. The Spirit will be my counsellor and protector against the things of the world.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
God loves us so much that He was willing to send his son into this world as a lowly human being so that he can walk among us and teach us what it means to be under His wing of grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love. Is it possible for us to develop that same sacrificial love for others? Probably... but we need to have that desire to have the same heart as Jesus in order to grow and mature in faith.

There's a reason why the indwelling of the Spirit in us is always repeated throughout the New Testament, let alone this book. We always forget how important and significant it is that a part of God is residing in us.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Nothing can stand against because God is always for us. There is nothing to fear because God will do away with things that are corrupt and evil. There is nothing to fear of God Himself because He is good and loving and gracious. The definition of faith is trusting and believing in something that hasn't happened or is something that can't be seen. Like the verse says if we love God, someone who's so great that we will never be able to see Him in this lifetime, then we should be able to love all the people around us as well.

1 John 3
The message in this book is so encouraging and continues to constantly remind me of two important things: Jesus and loving others.
1 John 3:1-3
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.
The fact that God has still chosen us to be a part of His kingdom is mindblowing. I'm only a mere human being who often stumbles into sin yet He continues to be gracious and accepting. How great is the love of the Father! Knowing that the gift of the Spirit dwelling in us is hope that I can look forward to as it is a counsellor who guides me and rescues me from the darkness.
1 John 3:5
But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
Jesus was a perfect, holy man who did not deserve the punishment that he endured on behalf of humankind. He paid for all sin that was ever to be done from now till Judgement Day. He took on the pain and suffering that no one would be able to endure...but now we are free from the world. We are given new life, new hope, new birth in Christ.
1 John 3:7
Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
There are many things in the world that can cause us to walk off the path of righteousness. Greed, jealousy, gossip, anger... these cause us to stumble. When we look the the Holy Word it keeps us on track. Our minds align with that of Christ so that we can be strong against these sinful feelings and remain true in the Lord.
1 John 3:10
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Love one another in speech, deeds, and thoughts. If we all strive to do that in every moment then it will result in us doing what's good in God's eyes.
1 John 3:13
Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.
It's scary to know but it speaks truth. There will be people who will judge, exclude, or persecute you for your faith. We have to stand firm and find God in these times, knowing that He will give us the strength and perseverance to get through those tough times.
1 John 3:16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
Jesus gave up his life for the broken, the wicked, and the needy. If we are to be disciples and imitate him in all aspects then we should try and develop a heart that is also willing to step in for our brothers and sisters. Laying down your life for a stranger may seem to be so hard, but Jesus did it without question. Do we even try and consider? I personally don't and it's my mentality that I really need to change.

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
Application: place your trust and confidence in God, knowing that Christ has already freed us from the guilt and shame of sin. Love one another, let it be an overflow from the love the Father has for us.

1 John 2
There are so many encouraging verses in this chapter.
1 John 2:1-3
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
Jesus bridged the gap between God the Father and the broken humanity so that we can still have a relationship with Him. He took upon himself the punishment that should have been ours. If we know Jesus: who he is and his purpose for walking alongside us in human form, than we would have that drive to imitate Jesus in all aspects of life. However, we as humans are still broken so being able to stay on the path and not be led astray by earthly things is difficult.
1 John 2:6
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
We're never going to perfectly be just like Jesus because we are not even near holy at all... but it's the mindset of wanting to be like Jesus, to be pure, clean, and righteous... that is what counts.
1 John 2:12
I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
"Jesus, all for Jesus. All I am and have and ever hope to be". These are lyrics from a worship song that popped up in my head when I read this verse. I am able to desire things and have a mind of my own because of Jesus. I have been forgiven for my sins, and as a symbol of eternal gratitude the things that I'll ever receive should be dedicated to Him... everything for Him.
1 John 2:14
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
When we are able to build our foundation on the Word of Life, then we will not be as easily swayed by Satan's tempting words and thoughts. It will give us the power to overcome anything.
1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Why crave for things that are not everlasting? Money, career, materials don't go with us to heaven. There's something even greater and better that we do not see now but will satisfy all of us to the core... and that is the love of God and being with Him in a place where sadness and suffering will be no more. Satan will not have control over us anymore and there will be no sin. A world like that sounds amazing, I can't even imagine how a utopian world can be like.
1 John 2:20
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
God has chosen us to be adopted into His family. His anointing, protection, and providence is for us to use for His glory. A relationship with the Father grants us access to the truth of His saving grace for us despite our wretchedness and brokenness that was caused by our first father.
1 John 2:24
See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
Find our roots in Christ. He is the one that will help us grow a faith as small as a mustard seed to one that can move mountains. We need to remain in Jesus and allow him to take the steering wheel in the journey called life.

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
Jesus bridged the gap between God the Father and the broken humanity so that we can still have a relationship with Him. He took upon himself the punishment that should have been ours. If we know Jesus: who he is and his purpose for walking alongside us in human form, than we would have that drive to imitate Jesus in all aspects of life. However, we as humans are still broken so being able to stay on the path and not be led astray by earthly things is difficult.
1 John 2:6
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
We're never going to perfectly be just like Jesus because we are not even near holy at all... but it's the mindset of wanting to be like Jesus, to be pure, clean, and righteous... that is what counts.
1 John 2:12
I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
"Jesus, all for Jesus. All I am and have and ever hope to be". These are lyrics from a worship song that popped up in my head when I read this verse. I am able to desire things and have a mind of my own because of Jesus. I have been forgiven for my sins, and as a symbol of eternal gratitude the things that I'll ever receive should be dedicated to Him... everything for Him.
1 John 2:14
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
When we are able to build our foundation on the Word of Life, then we will not be as easily swayed by Satan's tempting words and thoughts. It will give us the power to overcome anything.
1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Why crave for things that are not everlasting? Money, career, materials don't go with us to heaven. There's something even greater and better that we do not see now but will satisfy all of us to the core... and that is the love of God and being with Him in a place where sadness and suffering will be no more. Satan will not have control over us anymore and there will be no sin. A world like that sounds amazing, I can't even imagine how a utopian world can be like.
1 John 2:20
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
God has chosen us to be adopted into His family. His anointing, protection, and providence is for us to use for His glory. A relationship with the Father grants us access to the truth of His saving grace for us despite our wretchedness and brokenness that was caused by our first father.
1 John 2:24
See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
Find our roots in Christ. He is the one that will help us grow a faith as small as a mustard seed to one that can move mountains. We need to remain in Jesus and allow him to take the steering wheel in the journey called life.

1 John 1
In verse 1 we can deduce that Jesus is the Word of Life manifested into human form.
1 John 1:6-7
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
When we call ourselves disciples, we have to live out the teachings of Christ. If we don't, then we become liars and hypocrites since we don't do what we preach. The road is not easy but knowing that and continuing to push on towards a God-glorifying life then Jesus will help us and will purge the darkness out of us bit by bit.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
I kneel down at the foot of the cross and look to my Father, who I know that because of His unconditional love and Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, I am forgiven and will continue to be blessed so that I can serve and be an example of what a Christ follower should be.
Application: Knowing that you are a disciple, is your life showing that?

John 21
Jesus always guides us to the right bath that reaps promises and blessings, even now when we're not actually in his presence. The Holy Spirit that is later given to us and Jesus together is dwelling among us as a faithful counsellor. Jesus provides.
If we love Jesus, as Jesus asked Peter, we are called to "feed his lambs" and "take care of his sheep"
In verse 18, Jesus foreshadows Peter's God-glorifying death through a future crucifixion: stretching out his hands on the cross and being dressed and led against his will.

John 20
Jesus conquered the grave, overcome the sin that was held to him, and now sits at the righthand throne of God. He purchased us with his blood so that we are now free from the chains of sin.
John 20:29
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
This verse reminds me of what my faith really is like. Although I haven't seen Jesus in person, I know that he is the son of God who came down to earth to teach and be the tribute for the wretchedness of mankind. My wrongdoings that I did, do, and will do have all been forgiven already, by the grace of God with Jesus as the intercessor. Faith is believing in something that is not tangible... and for Jesus it is so worth it, even with any kind of judgement and persecution.
John 20:31
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
I am alive because of Jesus. I love Jesus.

Readying about the story of how Jesus was obedient to death on a cross according to his Father's will for me will be something that I can never fully grasp. On that cross my sins were taken and now I'm ransomed by Christ. Jesus knew this pain and suffering was coming to him yet he had no complaints. When I look back on my own walk, I complain about something so trivial such as a lack of sleep or ice-cream cravings... all these things that can't even come near to the debt that Jesus cleared with his actions.
I believe that if I can personally understand the Gospel deep down in my heart, then all my words, deeds, and thoughts will begin to align with a lifestyle just like Jesus. Here at the retreat the speaker shed life on dichotomies that we make that shouldn't exist... public vs. private spiritaul life, individual vs. corporate/community spiritual life, and physical vs. spiritual wellbeing. If i can stop compartmentalizing these aspects of life then I will be able to reflect the Gospel and live out a life of a disciple much better.

John 18:12-40
In this passage, Peter denied Jesus 3 times when we was asked whether or not he was his disciple. Our actions and thoughts easily reflect whether or not we are truly his disciple... it's one of those things where you can't be in a state of in-between. You are a disciple of Jesus if you can practice his teachings each day and follow his example. I'm definitely not the best disciple, for me I'm so easily swayed by the sinful thoughts of Satan but I do try to renew myself with the Word in order to put me back on track. I do not want to be like Peter... I want to have a lifestyle that exemplifies the Lord so that when I say that "I am a disciple of Jesus" then people will see something different, yet good.
John 18:36
Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
We cast our eyes to heaven, a part of the kingdom of God is where we will reside for eternity. The kingdom of God is also on Earth, built by followers and believers. We need to be bold, stand firm in our faith, and defend when our faith is challenged. Advancing the kingdom here is part of our calling as a disciple of Jesus and child of God.
Application: Remember that your lifestyle, actions, and thoughts are a testament to you being a disciple of Jesus.
