This chapter is about a vision concerning the devastation that will occur to the empires in the region (Medo-Persian, Alexander the Great's empire, and the Hellenistic empire). It will be a terrible time but the survivors will enjoy sanctuary in God's restored kingdom.
The vision was given to Daniel so that he can prepare God's people for the coming dark events of the empire. Rulers will overthrow rulers. Bad kings will hurt the people. They must continue to hope and stay rooted in God's love and promise.
A lot of history is revealed in this chapter.
The key point: You can endure anything as long as you hold onto God's promise
